Oscar Kiddie Pool

I was in my first Oscar Pool this year. Nothing serious. Not even an entry fee, but for fun. I felt maybe I had an advantage considering my love of film podcasts (not necessarily of film itself) and immediately went to copy the picks from Entertainment Weekly and had my choices backed up my the Las Vegas odds. I came in third.

And I even tied for third. The person I tied with admitted to looking up stuff online. Wait, we aren't allowed to do that? Also, I know better than to vote with my heart. If so, The Lego Movie would have been written in for Best Picture. (And Best Animated Picture too, I guess by default.)

 And Best Song.

But I am keeping my victory and tiny trophy. It gave me a great excuse to meet and talk with the other department peoples. Like in high school, I could always find common ground with anyone by judging movies. Good times.

Celebrity Sighting #Broken Dawn

Completing the Twlight Saga, I saw Doug Benson's Movie Interruption of Breaking Dawn Part 1 & 2 at the Castro Theater for SF Sketchfest. There is a very special moment when you are in a theater in a large group and everyone understand the ridiculousness of a situation. Like when the big reveal at the end of part two comes and the collective feeling of betrayal over bad writing. 

Or when Wendell Pierce was on screen and there was a collective reference to The Wire. It was pure poetry. Part 1 Doug was joined by Steve Agee, Chris Hardwick, Matt Kirshen, Arden Myrin, and Rory Scovel. Part 2 he was joined by Scott Aukermann, Jonah Ray, Todd Barry, Brendan Small, and Janet Varney. Everyone kept their shirts on. It was wonderful and I am sad the saga is over, but I know Doug will be back. He mentioned doing The Rock at some point. That would be incredible, but the dream is to have Mark Wahlberg at one of these shows, have him look at me in the eye and say "you're welcome."

Celebrity Sighting #Science

Sketchfest has begun and as a Christmas present to them, slash, birthday present to us, we watched Star Talk Live with Bill Nye the Science Guy. There were some science people there, but my focus was on the guest comic joining Eugene Mirman: H. Jon Benjamin.

I loved watching Dr. Katz and loved the voice of his slacker son Ben. Thanks to this show, I have started to watch and now love Archer. 

Yes, yes, I do love Mr. Nye himself. Though I did embarrass myself when I asked what his last name was. At the time I said his full name and asked if it was "Science Guy". My dumb ass processed Bill Nye as one word. But if anyone asks, I thought it was a stage name.

Trailer of Trailer

I really didn't like teaser trailers because they didn't really do much. Most of the time, it was just giant words of anticipation and no footage from the movie. Then again, I really hate the entire movie cut down into two and a half minutes. I only watched the first trailer for Interstellar and was very happy to only have the first third of the movie already in my head. I may have written about teasers of trailers, but now officially, I just watched a trailer for a trailer.

I will give credit to the creator of this spot. It's using the music to give me enough chills and get my attention. But then it's over and I'm supposed to happily await the commercial next week? Oh, I will watch it, but I won't be happy about it. Well played.

Who are These Bitches?

I have a sore spot since the toys spoiled the arrival of Princess Twilight Sparkle. I also have a problem with Princess Twilight Sparkle. So when I saw a yellow Princess Celestia in the corner of my eye, I was amused of the mistake toy. That is until I saw them up close.

So either more princesses will be introduced in the next season or this is a creation of non show characters because all girls want more princesses. They apparently also want unnaturally colored human dolls with pony personalities. 

I used to walk around toy stores and marvel at how much stuff that kids own. That was about fifteen years ago. Now I wonder into the toy section, think of how much I could play with, get frustrated because I want it all and am grateful that now I have to pay for it, I can just walk away because it's not worth it. Kids don't really have a chance. Hell, adults don't have a chance. I'll just have to listen to Queen Elsa and let it go.
